How to make sure your dog has healthy teeth

If you have a new Miniature Schnauzer puppy, you need to keep your Schnauzer healthy as well as you can. One of the ways to do that is by brushing their teeth. Just like humans, brushing a dog’s teeth can prevent cavities and plaque build-up. If you intend to keep a tooth brushing schedule, it’s better to start early and remain consistent. The more familiar your dog is with you brushing their teeth, the less likely they are to put up a fuss.

Why brush a dog’s teeth?

Many pet owners choose to forgo tooth brushing in favor of a good diet. While diet does play a big role in a dog’s dental health, brushing their teeth is not without benefits.

Brushing their teeth consistently can keep bacteria from building up in your dog’s mouth, and prevent cavities. That saves you from some expensive dental work. However, if you don’t want to brush your dog’s teeth, there are plenty of toys and dental chews out there that can help clean them.

How do you brush a dog’s teeth?

You’ll need a soft-bristled toothbrush, or one intended for dogs, and dog toothpaste. We don’t recommend using human toothpaste, because it shouldn’t be swallowed. It’s very hard to stop a dog from swallowing toothpaste. Carefully brush all of your dog’s teeth, making sure to get both the fronts and backs of each tooth. Offer lots of treats and praise so your dog sees this as a good thing. We recommend this article if you’re training your dog to get its teeth brushed. You can brush your dog’s teeth anywhere from twice a day, to twice a week.

Brushing your Schnauzer’s teeth is not a guarantee of dental health, however, it can put you a step ahead in making sure your dog is as healthy as it can be.
